The Grant Building

New York Times crossword author and comedian Zach Sherwin hosts two guest panelists solving an original crossword puzzle onstage at The Grant Building!

MEET THE SOLVERS:

PHUC TRAN

Phuc is an author, educator, classicist, storyteller, and tattooer. His TEDx talk was featured on NPR’s “TED Radio Hour,” and his memoir “Sigh, Gone” was published by Flatiron Books in April 2020.

TERRI SCHURZ

Terri owns and operates Bath’s beloved and independent Mockingbird Bookshop. While The Crossword Show is indisputably bookish and word-oriented, we have never before had a guest solver who was an ACTUAL BOOKSTORE OWNER, and we can’t wait to have Terri join the panel!

  • For each show, Zach collaborates with a different NYTimes-published crossword maker to create a customized, exclusive puzzle. The clues work just like normal crossword clues, but they’re also rhyming rap lyrics - every performance includes a musical clue preview.

After the clue rap, the solving starts! Everything is displayed on a big screen so the crowd can follow the action. As the solvers decipher the clues, Zach takes the show down deep dives of comedy, music, wordplay, and trivia, all inspired by the various answer words.

Everything ultimately ties together for a grand finale that’s as satisfying as it is mind-blowing. There’s trivia, quizzes, crowd participation, and tons of surprises. And you don’t need ANY crossword expertise to enjoy this brain-tickling, life-affirming show!

  • Zach Sherwin is a published New York Times crossword author and Los Angeles-based comedian. His writing for the web series Epic Rap Battles of History has received numerous Streamy Awards and Emmy nominations, and his performances as everyone from Albert Einstein to Stephen King to Alexander the Great have amassed nearly one billion YouTube views. His own music & wordplay videos have millions of views, too, and his other writing credits range from The CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend to MAD Magazine.

Zach's TV appearances include America's Got Talent, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, The Pete Holmes Show, and more!
